May 9 program highlights Margo Jankiewicz

From childhood on, Margo had an incredible fascination with gadgets and tools and her curiosity led her to a myriad of experiments with alarm clocks, radios and found knick knacks. She was passionate about taking these apart, admiring the intricate parts which gave the objects life, and attempting to put them back together.

Now, she becomes easily engrossed in decoding, simplifying and reconstructing complex jewelry pieces and taking them to the next level. Her work combines the use of beading, wire work, polymer clay and various metals in inventive techniques to make creative and imaginative pieces of art and jewelry.

The BSGC will provide coffee and tea at the meetings. We are asking members, who’s last name begin with N-S, to bring a treat to this meeting. We ask everyone’s assistance in setting up and cleaning up after the meeting.

There will be a bead raffle at this meeting. Raffle tickets will be at the membership desk at the front of the meeting room. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. We are always looking for bead donations. Please contact a board member or bring it to this meeting.

Upcoming Swarovski Art Quilting Design Contest

CREATE YOUR STYLE with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS is pleased to announce its first ever CREATE YOUR STYLE Art Quilting Design Contest for 2012.

Taking inspiration from the world of music, contestants are required to design an original quilt using SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS to express their own personal design theme. A jury of leading industry experts will judge the quilts on the creativity and, uniqueness of the design, the successful incorporation of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS into the quilt, the quality of the workmanship and overall presentation.

Deadline - All applications must be submitted by June 1, 2012.

Submissions are not to exceed 47 inches square in dimension.

Quilt must be inspired on the theme of “Sound”

This competition is open to residents of all countries!

Leona Ketterl, a Chicago architect obsessed with jewelry making started making jewelry as a hobby to design and make something in a single sitting. This is the antithesis to working as an architect; projects often take years before they are three dimensional and can be experienced in a tactile way. Jewelry making is, in comparison, instantly gratifying. For Leona, each piece is another mini landscape: a milky way of planets, various crops on a farm, a bucolic garden, a central business district ...

Be sure to reserve your spot (send $50 deposit) for our first annual BSGC Artist Retreat being held May 18 - 20, 2012! It is going to be at the LOMC: Lutheran Outreach Ministries Center located in beautiful Oregon, Illinois.

Costs include lodging for two (2) nights and five (5) delicious meals. Single occupancy is $174, double occupancy is $154, and triple occupancy is $138.

Our fun weekend begins on Friday, May 18th at 4 PM and lasts til Sunday, May 20th at 4 PM. Bring beading projects you are working on, books to read, and hiking shoes, if you so desire. We will also have access to the pond which has canoes to rent. Members will be able to demo techniques, share with others, and just do as little or as much they desire.

The Holiday Party is Almost Here!

Our Holiday Party is Thursday, December 8 at our usual meeting spot, the VFW at 10 W. Higgins Rd., Park Ridge. Fun will include a buffet dinner catered by Corky’s Catering, great raffle prizes, our annual silent auction and socializing with other bead friends. Check-in starts at 6pm with dinner at 7pm. Everyone must bring at least one item for the silent auction. Anything bead related is great, but no magazines please. Don’t forget to arrive a bit early to set up your auction items and check out the jewelry to be raffled. This evening is our biggest fundraiser so come ready with cash and checkbooks.

It is with great sadness that we share sad news of the passing of Carol Laureys, longtime BSGC member, talented bead artist, and dear friend to many. Carol passed away on October 11, 2011. We will miss her beautiful smile and presence at our monthly meetings. Obit: Caroline V. Vanessa Walilko, wearable art maker www.kalibutterfly.com Vanessa has been making jewelry for the past twenty years and has spent the past two years making it her career. Her beadwork and chainmaille jewelry have appeared in Step by Step Wire Jewelry, Lapidary Journal Jewelry Artist, Bead&Button and Bead Magazine. Her wearable art pieces have been featured in national exhibitions and won international awards. Vanessa will be talking about her chainmaille and beadwork and her journey towards making art her career.

We’ll be having a silent auction again at our Holiday Party, so plan now on your donation. Everyone must bring at least one item. You may choose to de-stash some beads, stringing supplies, a tube of seed beads or bead storage items. Anything bead- related is great, but no magazines, please. Don’t forget to arrive a bit early to set up your items for the silent auction, too! Our fund raising raffle will also take place. If you wish to donate a completed piece of jewelry worth $75 or more, please contact Nancy Dolan. Come ready to purchase raffle tickets for your favorite item. Our Holiday Party will be held on Thursday, December 8 at our usual meeting spot, the VFW in Park Ridge at 7pm. Come and join the fun including good food, great raffle prizes, our annual silent auction and socializing with other bead friends. Dinner will be catered by Corky’s Catering and will cost $10 per member and $12 per guest. The menu includes herbed chicken and Italian beef, baked potato salad with bacon and cheddar, bow-tie pasta with tomato and feta, honey coleslaw and marshmallow fruit salad. Dessert is a sweet tray of brownies and cookies. All beverages will be purchased at the VFW bar. You’ll need to RSVP in advance so we can be sure to order enough food. You may pay by cash or check at the Sept, Oct or Nov meetings, through our website via PayPal, or mail payment to P.O. Box 8103, Wilmette, IL 60091- 8103. All payments must be received by November 21.

2011 Bead Challenge

The Bead Challenge theme this year is "Shades of Gray" and projects are due at the start of the October 12 meeting. Anything qualifies - jewelry, beads, sculptural pieces—as long as it’s in "shades of gray." So put your thinking caps on and your hands to work on this challenging project. New member, Maija Steele, has volunteered to run this year’s challenge. What a great way to get involved in the group!
